NWSL Week 8: Chicago Red Stars vs Washington Spirit

In this Week 8 matchup, the Chicago Red Stars hosted the Washington Spirit at SeatGeek Stadium. Although the final score favored the Spirit 3–2, Chicago showed visible signs of improvement and delivered a performance full of potential.

First Half:

The match started with high intensity as Washington immediately pressed high and forced a mistake just seconds after kickoff, hitting the crossbar in the opening minute. They quickly took control of the rhythm.

Chicago midfielder Narumi Miura started as an inside-half. In the 3rd minute, she tried to progress the ball through dribbling but was brought down. However, she struggled to find her rhythm afterward, often out of sync with teammates both in positioning and movement.

Julia Grosso, starting as a central attacking midfielder for Chicago, brought balance and structure to their build-up play. The Red Stars began developing fluid plays from the goalkeeper through the center-backs and midfielders, progressing toward the flanks with growing confidence.

Washington attempted to attack through wide switches, with their right winger tucking inside and the fullback overlapping. However, poor execution and a lack of anticipation from off-ball players resulted in many broken plays. Their build-up lacked cohesion and flow.

After the 20th minute, Chicago began threatening in the final third. Midfielder No. 8, Joseph, had a good chance but failed to control the ball properly and was caught offside. She looked off-form and committed several basic errors throughout the first half.

The breakthrough came in the 30th minute. Washington delivered a low cross from the right, and Chicago defender No. 34, Schlegel, inadvertently directed the ball into her own net — an unfortunate own goal.

But Chicago responded quickly. Just five minutes later, Grosso timed her run perfectly behind Miura, who was caught ball-watching. Grosso calmly slotted the ball into the far corner with her left foot, scoring her first NWSL goal — a composed and technically sound finish.

Washington regained the lead before halftime. After Hatch held up the ball centrally, a well-timed pass found the overlapping center-back, who switched it to the left. No. 19 fired it home with a one-touch finish. A well-crafted team goal sent Washington into the break with a 2–1 lead.

Second Half:

The second half resumed with no substitutions from either side. Chicago began to grow into the game, connecting passes through the middle and threatening more consistently. Miura, however, continued to struggle, missing a simple pass in the 50th minute and displaying limited passing variation and poor weight control.

In the 52nd minute, Joseph broke down the left side and found Ludmila, who had her shot blocked for a corner. Chicago’s combination play was beginning to show promise.

In the 54th minute, Chicago found the equalizer. A sharp passing sequence between Grosso, Ludmila, and Joseph broke Washington’s lines. Center-back Staab, who had pushed forward, followed up a loose ball in the box and smashed it into the net. A beautiful team goal that showcased their growing chemistry.

Chicago pushed for the lead, showing intelligent movement and clean possession. In the 64th minute, Maitane and Grosso combined well and showed some different level of play on the right to left, leading to a Schlegel header that narrowly missed.

Both teams made substitutions in the 77th minute. Chicago brought on No. 10 Groom and 11 Curranto freshen up the attack, while Washington subbed off Miura — who had failed to impact the game — to make a tactical shift. It was a frustrating day for Miura, capped off by an early exit.

Just a minute later, Chicago created a golden opportunity. Substitute No. 10, Groom, sent a slick through ball to Grosso, who went one-on-one with the keeper. Her shot, however, was denied.

Although Chicago dominated possession and chances late in the game, Washington showed their individual quality. In the 82nd minute, despite facing a 1v3 situation, No. 19 Kouassi broke free down the right and delivered a pinpoint cross to No. 21 Monday, who calmly finished for the match-winner. A gut-wrenching goal for Chicago after they had controlled the tempo.

Chicago made their final substitution around the 90th minute in an effort to find an equalizer, but it was too late. Washington held on to secure the 3–2 win.

Player and Team Notes:

◉ Narumi Miura (Washington Spirit)

Since her move from North Carolina, Miura has struggled to adapt to Washington’s system and style of play. At her previous club, her strengths in combination play and short passing were highlighted, but at Washington, she appears disconnected from the team's rhythm and structure. There was visible frustration throughout the match, both in her execution and communication. Still, this period could be a necessary challenge in her development — an opportunity to find her identity and assertiveness in a new environment.

◉ Chicago Red Stars

Under new Coach Henmi, the team is clearly improving. There's structure and unity in both attack and defense, and Julia Grosso has become a central figure in their possession-based style. If they can sharpen their finishing and maintain their composure in critical moments, the results will follow. Though the points slipped away today, this match was full of positives and a clear sign that the team is on an upward trajectory.

Chicago will aim to build on this encouraging performance in their next match, while Miura will look to bounce back and find her rhythm in a new role.

■試合展開：後半

後半は両チームともメンバー変更なしでスタート。シカゴは連携が良くなり、ボール保持から中央を崩す形も増えていく。一方で三浦成美は後半もなかなか噛み合わず、50分にはシンプルなパスをミス。パスの技術的バリエーションの少なさや、強弱のコントロール不足が目立った。

52分にはジョセフがドリブルで左サイドを突破し、ルドミラへラストパス。惜しくも相手にブロックされCKに終わるも、シカゴの連携による崩しが形になりつつあった。

そして54分、シカゴがついに同点ゴールを奪う。グロッソ、ルドミラ、ジョセフといった攻撃の核が狭いエリアでテンポ良くつなぎ、最後はCBのスターブが前線まで上がり、こぼれ球をゴールに押し込んだ。まさに全員の連携が生んだ美しいゴールだった。

その後もシカゴは高い技術力とインテリジェンスを活かして攻勢を強める。64分にはマイタネとグロッソの巧みな連携からクロス、シュレーゲルのヘディングも枠を捉えられず。

77分には両チームが交代を実施。シカゴは10番と11番を投入し攻撃を活性化。ワシントンは三浦成美を下げ、新たなアクセントを加える。三浦はこの試合、最後までリズムを掴むことができず、悔しい途中交代となった。

ノースカロライナから移籍して以降、環境やスタイルの違いに直面している。繋ぐサッカーの中で活かされていた自分のプレーが、ワシントンでは機能せず、チームの中でどう影響力を持つか模索している段階。味方と呼吸が合わない場面が多く、精神的にもフラストレーションが溜まる内容となった。それでも、チームは結果を出しており、自分の存在意義と向き合う時期。ここを乗り越えて、より自立したプレーヤーへと成長していくことに期待したい。

◉シカゴ・レッドスターズ

Henmi監督のもと、チームは明らかに良い方向へと変化している。攻守においてやるべきことが整理され、一体感も感じられた。ジュリア・グロッソを中心に、攻撃の形ができつつあり、あとは決定機を確実にモノにできるかが課題。勝ち点は逃したが、内容的には今後に繋がる収穫の多いゲームとなった。

次節に向け、シカゴの粘り強い成長と、三浦の巻き返しに注目したい。
